West Highland Way Day 2: Drymen to Rowardennan

Day 2 Garmin

Day 2 Drymen to Rowardennon Garmin recording

Starting the day with sore feet did not help anyone’s outlook, but we cannot complain about the weather — it has been truly spectacular — sunny, warm and breezy, really perfect beyond our expectations. Today’s path out of Drymen took us through some fields and quickly started up Conic Hill. Pretty much directly straight up Conic Hill, in fact, and then straight back down the other side. When we’re done here I’m going to get in touch with the Scotland Trail Authority* and blow their minds with news of this New World innovation in the world of trail-building known as the “switch-back”. The knowledge that it is possible to get up and over a ridge without proceeding directly up the steepest portion of the fall-line will surely revolutionize Scottish route-building, and generations of trekkers will sing songs of praise to my name.

The rest of the day saw us starting north along the eastern shore of Loch Lomond. It was a breezy, gloriously sunny summer day of the kind I don’t think they get too many of here. We mostly managed to enjoy it — the scenery was really stunning — but lost momentum again about 3/4 of the way through the day as afternoon turned to early evening and our feet went from mild-complaint to no-really-seriously-hurting-please-stop and we still had a few miles to go (and again felt somewhat mislead as our guidebook miles were somewhat short of the miles we ended up walking to get to our destination).

Some trepidation as tomorrow is again a long-mileage day and several folks have told us it is the hardest day so far…

* No such organization, so far as I know, this is just a fantasy Authority I have concocted to whom I have been writing very strongly-worded letters w/r/t route-finding choices to keep my mind off my barking dogs as I hike
